El Sistema Scotland concert
“The Big Concert” in Raploch on Thursday 21st June was incredible! This was the first concert with pupils from the El Sistema programme in Raploch performing side by side with the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra and conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The El Sistema programme in Raploch is only 4 years old and it was amazing to see some of its most talented pupils performing alongside this world famous Venezuelan orchestra. The concert was staged in a field in Raploch with Stirling Castle in the background; an audience of nearly 10,000 people enduring the Scottish rain(!!!) but definitely enjoying the fantastic music & spectacular fireworks; and beamed live to millions on British TV. It was a phenomenal success!
Prior to the concert, we were privileged to hear words from Maestro Jose Antonio Abreu (the founder of El Sistema in Venezuela), Richard Holloway (the driving force behind El Sistema in Scotland), Bob Jack (CEO Stirling Council), the Right Honourable Jeremy Hunt (Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media & Sport) and Fiona Hyslop (Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Culture & External Affairs). All of these speakers praised the success of El Sistema in Scotland and confirmed their support for it in Raploch and a new city suburb location to be officially announced very soon.
BVS was very proud to make a financial donation to El Sistema Scotland’s Big Concert as we see this initiative as an excellent example of Venezuela bringing its successful El Sistema philosophy to help drive a social transformation in a very under privileged part of Scotland.
The final surprise was when Richard Holloway announced that the Raploch children’s orchestra will visit Venezuela next year to again play with the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. Now, that will be a truly amazing experience!!!
Gracias El Sistema.
